The meeting was held at the St Columb Major Council Chamber on Thursday 16th May 2019 at 19:00. Attending for Q&A was the Police Commissioner Alison Hernandez, Chief Inspector Brent Ireland (East Cornwall) and Acting Inspector Steve Johnson (Newquay).
The Trade asked for the Police to support the ‘Zero Tolerance Campaign Against Abuse towards Taxi & PHV Drivers’, presenting a proposed information leaflet to be distributed to all drivers & staff, some proposed posters in A5 & A4 size and a template incident report form (see the full question here).
The response from the Commissioner and Chief Inspector was a clear yes, and directed attention to Zoe Wonaacort of Safer Newquay, who will contact me by email in due course to support our campaign.
The point was also made about the fact that we do not have a representative from the trade in the Safer Newquay initiative, and that we appear to be ‘black balled’ from it. The Chief Inspector’s response was that of disappointment, and was very much in favour of such an inclusion, and again pointed to Zoe Wonaacort of Safer Newquay to take this forward.
In addition, points were raised about the growing numbers of homeless on the streets at night, and the concerns over related crimes to this, which was addressed as part of an ongoing initiative.
